Wholism can be defined as an idea that different parts of a whole are interconnected and cannot be understood in isolation. This concept is fundamental to the practice of Herbal Medicine. Our commitment to finding balance in health and wellbeing extends from each of us as individuals to our community and to our environment. At the Wellington Apothecary we are committed to sustainability. We invite your support and collaboration in finding ways to reduce our environmental footprint.
We source our herbal teas and plants extracts from certified organic sources wherever possible. All of our herbal teas are wild crafted or grown organically. Organic ingredients in our skincare are clearly labelled on our packaging. We are committed to transparency regarding the country of origin of ingredients. This helps us to ensure that we are not contributing to issues such as over harvesting or exploitation and can feel confident that our ingredients are ethically sourced. All of our ingredients are Vegan excluding our New Zealand organic beeswax. We are always on the hunt for more local producers and suppliers, so if you are interested in working with us please don’t hesitate to get in contact – we would love to hear from you!
REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
Ultimately, we aim to have a positive impact on our environment and climate - We have recently become a Climate Positive business with EKOS meaning we offset 120% of emissions created from our business practises. This includes all emissions from electricity, waste, freight and more. We calculate our carbon footprint annually and the credits purchased go towards supporting the growth and protection of EKOS indigenous forestry projects. EKOS currently have 2 New Zealand based projects, as well as projects in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. While helping reduce carbon emissions, these forest projects also help maintain and strengthen biodiversity, enhance water quantity, control erosion and provide community development. environmentally friendly packaging
Our herbal teas are packaged in natural paper bags that are 100% biodegradable and compostable once the tin tie and label are removed. We are currently experimenting with more environmentally friendly label options and can offer label free products on request. Our skincare is packaged in glass that is fully recyclable and reusable. We are in the process of moving to aluminium lids and caps on our vessels as an alternative to plastic. Aluminium is 100% recyclable and does not degrade during the recycling process as plastic does. These two materials are best suited to use in a circular economy. Although we do still offer plastic pumps we are currently looking into a new recycling initiative for this difficult to recycle plastic.
refill & reuse
Where possible we encourage you to bring your own vessel for us to dispense into. Please just make sure these are clean, sterile and dry. We can fill and refill your essential oils, carrier oils and blends, hydrosols and herbal teas in store. We offer a $1 discount for refilling your bottles. We are considering ways to refill the rest of our skincare range but are currently unable to do so. As we are transitioning to aluminium caps we can offer these as an alternative to pumps on our bottled products, also with a $1 discount. You can return your clean, sterile and dry vessels to our bottle bank for others to reuse free of charge and you are invited to use the bottle bank for your home creations.
THE LITTLE THINGS
In the day to day running of our shop and clinic space we aim to reduce waste as much as possible. We have recently started using a bicycle courier for our Wellington inner-city deliveries. We use biodegradable gloves, Green Cane compostable tissues and hand towels, and environmentally friendly cleaning products. We compost green waste, recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and glass and aim to be paper free wherever possible. We are continuously revising and improving our day to day practices, and working with our suppliers to help reduce environmental impact across the supply chain. If you have any suggestions or questions for us, we are always open to hearing these so please get in contact.
