An Evening of Poetry with Wellington Poet - Mary Walker
Join me for this poetry workshop where I will guide you to write your own poem, giving voice to what it is you really long for.
We'll begin with the opening line from my poem It’s Not Too Late, and you’ll finish with your very own version of the poem—a clarion call from the deepest part of you.
The deeper part of us knows what we want and need, even when our thinking mind does not. But that part of us speaks in other-than-ordinary terms. She is all feelings, images, metaphors, single words, music … the language of poetry. Poetry is deeply connected to our intuitive self, our wild self, our creative self, our soul self—whatever you like to call her.
The workshop will include practices for listening to the deeper part of ourselves, and for capturing it in poetry. I’ll show you how to step away from linear language and perfect grammar, and grab hold of the wild, weird and wonderful language of your deepest self instead.
Haven’t written a poem before? This workshop is designed with you in mind. All you need is a desire to write, and a willingness to listen deeply to what is stirring in you.
This workshop includes a personalised response to your poem, by email, in the week following the workshop.
When 5pm Saturday the 19th of July. Duration 90 Minutes.
Where Wellington Apothecary, 110a+b Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Cost $95 per person
This workshop requires a minimum of 6 to go ahead. We will contact you if this is the case and your ticket will be refunded in full.
About Mary
I am a poet, writer and creator living in a valley nestled at the foot of the Remutaka Ranges in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I acknowledge Maori as tangata whenua and custodians of Aotearoa.
We are a family of five humans, four beloved cats, one dear old dog, plus all the birds and creatures that call this valley home and, of course, the land.
Prior to this creative life I was a lawyer. I left that for… something, anything else. I didn’t know what. So I tried new things, loved working with young people, and ended up happily pursuing questions like what makes humans tick, what are we capable of, what calls us to lead, what kind of leadership actually makes a difference, what is ‘purpose’, what does it mean to follow our callings, who are we and what are we all doing here?
Mostly I love the mystery and magic of being alive. How about you?
