Wildcrafted Akeake Tea
Akeake is native to New Zealand and can also be found in parts of Africa, the Americas, southern Asia and Australia. This evergreen shrub is identifiable by the green or crimson colour of the upstanding leaves. The phrase "āke, ake, ake" means ‘Forever and ever’ in Te Reo Māori and is reference to the durability and longevity of this hardwood.
In Māori healing traditions the juice of Akeake leaves were applied to fresh wounds to stop bleeding. For centuries, communities worldwide have made use of Akeake’s medicine for many conditions. The leaves were chewed without swallowing the juice to relieve the pain of toothache. A mash of chewed leaf was applied to the stings of stingrays. A wash made from boiled leaves was used to relieve rashes and itchy skin. A poultice was applied to boils, sores or ulcers and a decoction of the leaves drunk to alleviate constipation. In Australia, the leaves were used in place of hops for brewing beer.
Traditionally, Akeake has been a popular remedy for respiratory infections because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Akeake can be taken either as a tea or in liquid herbal formulas to support the body in cases of sore throats, cough and the common cold. Akeake extracts may offer some immune modulating properties to improve the immune response to infection and speed recovery.
