What is Petrichor?
Petrichor, from the Ancient Greek πέτρα (pétra) 'rock', or πέτρος (pétros) 'stone', and ἰχώρ (ikhṓr), the ethereal fluid and blood of the gods in Greek mythology. Petrichor is a pleasant aroma that often accompanies rain after a dry spell, described as a comforting, warm and earthy scent. A unique aroma that our human senses are well attuned to through evolution, as our ancestors have relied on rain for survival. The scent of petrichor is associated with the release of aromatic compounds into the air, after rain comes into contact with the porous surface of soil and stone. These compounds are a combination of plant oils, absorbed into the earth, geosmin (the earthy smell of water) and other molecules and bacteria. Re-created in this earthy blend of wood, root and leaf derived essential oils, with a touch of cinnamon for warmth.
